How to Rank in ChatGPT and Get Your Website Cited

Short answer: You cannot buy or force a spot in ChatGPT's answers, but you can make your site an easy source to pick. Let OpenAI's search crawler in, make sure search engines have indexed you, answer real questions clearly at the top of each page, back them with specific facts and a named author, and get mentioned on other trusted sites. Then check monthly by asking ChatGPT the questions your customers ask.

How does ChatGPT choose which websites to cite?

ChatGPT answers in two ways. For many questions it answers from what it learned in training, and it does not link to anyone. When it searches the web (you see "Searched the web" or source cards), it fetches live pages, reads them and links the ones it used.

The second case is where a small site has a real chance. To be cited, your page needs to be findable (crawlable and indexed), relevant (it answers the exact question) and easy to quote (the answer is stated plainly, not buried in paragraph six).

How to rank your website in ChatGPT: 8 steps

1. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt

OpenAI uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search. OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that opt out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot is a different bot used for training, and blocking it is a separate choice. Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and make sure neither a blanket Disallow: / nor a rule for OAI-SearchBot blocks your public pages.

2. Get indexed in Google and Bing

AI search tools lean on pages that search engines already know about. Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and in Bing Webmaster Tools. Bing powers Microsoft Copilot, and submitting there takes five minutes.

3. Write for the exact question

People ask ChatGPT full questions, such as "what is the best free SEO checker that doesn't need sign up". Use questions like that as your H2 headings, and answer each in the first one or two sentences below it. Keep the extra detail for afterwards.

4. Be specific

Compare "our tool is fast" with "a scan takes about 10 seconds and runs 39 checks". AI tools prefer statements they can repeat with confidence. Put prices, dates, counts, versions and names on the page in plain text.

5. Show who wrote it

Add an author name, a short line about their experience and a visible "last updated" date. Pages without an owner or a date are harder for anyone, human or model, to trust.

6. Keep important text out of JavaScript

Many AI crawlers read the raw HTML and do not run scripts. If your product details only appear after JavaScript runs, they may be invisible. Right-click your page, choose View Page Source, and search for your key sentences. If they are not there, a crawler may not see them either.

7. Use structured data that matches the page

Organization, Article or BlogPosting, Product and FAQPage schema help machines label what is on the page. Only mark up what visitors can actually see. No schema type guarantees a citation, but mismatched schema can hurt trust.

8. Get mentioned elsewhere

This is the slowest step and often the most important. AI answers often cite review sites, forums, comparison articles and directories rather than the brand's own page. Get listed in relevant directories, answer questions in communities where you are genuinely useful, and ask happy customers for reviews. One honest mention on a trusted site can do more than ten pages on your own.

How can I check if ChatGPT mentions my website?

  1. Write down 10 questions a customer would ask before buying from you.
  2. Ask each one in a new ChatGPT chat with search on, and also in Perplexity and Google.
  3. Note whether your brand is named and whether your site is linked.
  4. In Google Analytics, look for referral traffic from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai.
  5. Repeat once a month and compare.

Answers change between sessions, so look for trends over several months rather than reacting to a single answer.

SEO AI Assistant checks the things on this list that live on your page: question headings, answer-first paragraphs, author and date, schema, AI crawler access in robots.txt and llms.txt. It gives you AEO and GEO scores out of 100 and tells you what to fix, free and without an account.

Ranking in ChatGPT: questions

Is there SEO for ChatGPT?

Yes, people usually call it GEO, generative engine optimization. It builds on normal SEO and adds things like answer-first writing, clear facts, authorship and making sure AI search crawlers can reach your pages.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?

There is no fixed time. Once a page is crawlable and indexed, it can appear in ChatGPT's search answers within days or weeks. Showing up in answers that come from training data alone can take much longer, because models are retrained only from time to time.

Does blocking GPTBot stop my site from appearing in ChatGPT?

Blocking GPTBot stops OpenAI from using your pages for training. Appearing in ChatGPT search depends on OAI-SearchBot, which is a separate crawler with its own robots.txt rule.

Can a small business rank in ChatGPT?

Yes, especially for narrow, local or specific questions where big sites have thin answers. A small site that answers one niche question better than anyone else has a real chance of being cited.

Does ChatGPT use Google rankings?

OpenAI has not published exactly how it ranks sources. In practice, pages that rank well in search engines are cited more often, so strong SEO still helps.
