Why Is My Website Not Showing in ChatGPT? 7 Causes and Fixes

Short answer: The most common reason is that your robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot, the crawler ChatGPT search uses to find pages. After that, check that the page is indexed in the big search engines, that its main text is in the HTML rather than loaded by JavaScript, and that it answers the question in its first lines with facts, a named author and sources.

Is ChatGPT searching the web, or answering from memory?

ChatGPT answers in two ways. Without search, it answers from what the model learned in training, which stops at a cut-off date and may predate your site or your latest page. With search, it looks pages up live and links to them as sources. Only the second can show a new or recently changed page, so test with search turned on.

7 reasons your website is not showing in ChatGPT

  1. robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. A rule like User-agent: * with Disallow: / blocks it too. Blocking GPTBot is different: that only opts you out of model training.
  2. A firewall or CDN blocks AI crawlers. Some hosts and CDNs offer a one-click "block AI bots" setting. Check that it doesn't also block search crawlers, and check your server logs for requests from OAI-SearchBot.
  3. The page isn't indexed in the big search engines. ChatGPT search also draws on third-party search providers, so a page missing from them is harder to find. Check the page in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and look for a stray noindex.
  4. The main text only appears after JavaScript runs. Many AI crawlers read the raw HTML and don't run scripts. If view-source shows an empty shell, they see an empty page.
  5. The answer is buried. AI answers quote passages, not whole pages. Put a one or two sentence answer right under the question it answers, and use the question as a heading.
  6. There is nothing specific to cite. Pages with numbers, dates, steps, prices and named sources give an answer engine something to quote. Pages of general advice give it nothing new.
  7. Nobody else mentions you. Reviews, directory listings, forum answers and articles that name your brand help AI tools connect it to a topic. A visible author and About page help too; see What is E-E-A-T?

How can I check if ChatGPT can see my website?

  1. Ask ChatGPT, with search on, a question your page answers, and see which sources it lists.
  2. Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User and any User-agent: * group with Disallow: /.
  3. Look in your analytics for visits with utm_source=chatgpt.com, which ChatGPT adds to many of the links it shows.
  4. Search your server logs for OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User requests.
  5. Open the page with JavaScript turned off, or use view-source, and confirm the main text is there.

Causes and fixes at a glance

What to check first when ChatGPT doesn't show your site
CauseHow to spot itFix
Search crawler blockedrobots.txt names OAI-SearchBot or blocks *Allow OAI-SearchBot; block GPTBot instead if you only want to stop training
Bot blocked at the CDNNo OAI-SearchBot requests in logsTurn off blanket AI-bot blocking, or allow-list search crawlers
Not indexedPage missing from Search Console or Bing Webmaster ToolsRemove noindex, submit the sitemap, request indexing
JavaScript-only textview-source shows little textRender the main text on the server
Buried answerFirst paragraph is an intro, not an answerQuestion heading plus a short direct answer
Nothing to citeNo numbers, dates or sourcesAdd your own data, examples and links to primary sources
Weak trust signalsNo byline, About page or outside mentionsByline, About page, contact details, reviews and listings

None of these guarantee a citation. ChatGPT decides what to show, and fixing them only removes the reasons it can't use your page.

Check what AI search can read in one click

SEO AI Assistant is a free Chrome extension that runs 39 SEO, AEO and GEO checks from Chrome's side panel. It checks robots.txt against 10 AI search crawlers, looks for text that only appears after JavaScript, flags a missing answer up top and labels the trust checks. Each failed check shows how many points fixing it adds. See how scores work.

ChatGPT visibility questions

Why does ChatGPT not mention my website?

Usually because ChatGPT search can't reach or find the page: robots.txt or a CDN blocks OAI-SearchBot, the page isn't indexed, or its text loads by JavaScript. If it can reach the page, it may simply find a clearer, more specific answer elsewhere.

Does blocking GPTBot remove my site from ChatGPT search?

No. OpenAI says GPTBot is used for model training and OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, and each follows its own robots.txt rules. You can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot.

How long does it take for ChatGPT to show a new page?

There is no published timeline. ChatGPT search finds pages through its own crawler and third-party search providers, so a page usually needs to be crawled and indexed first. Without search, the model only knows pages from before its training cut-off.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?

We are not aware of any way to pay for placement in ChatGPT's organic answers. Treat anyone who promises guaranteed ChatGPT rankings with suspicion.

Does llms.txt help me appear in ChatGPT?

We have not seen OpenAI confirm that it reads llms.txt when choosing sources. Allowing OAI-SearchBot and writing clear, specific pages matters more. See What is llms.txt?
