How to Track AI Search Traffic and Citations to Your Website
Short answer: Use four sources together. Search Console counts Google AI Overviews and AI Mode inside its normal Web totals. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report, in preview since February 2026, shows how often Copilot and Bing's AI summaries cite your pages. Google Analytics 4 shows visits referred by chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and other AI sites. Server logs show which AI crawlers fetch your pages. No single tool sees every citation.
Why is AI traffic hard to measure?
AI answers often solve the question without a click, links appear only for some answers, and each AI company reports different data, or none. So you measure what each source can see and accept the gaps. Be wary of any tool that promises to show every time an AI mentions you: answers change from one run to the next, and most providers don't share that data.
How to find out AI citations for a website
No single report lists every AI answer that cites you, so combine what each AI tool shows. This takes about 30 minutes a month for one site:
- Bing Webmaster Tools, AI Performance. Open the report to see which of your pages Copilot and Bing's AI summaries cite, how often, and the grounding queries behind them. It is the only first-party citation report today.
- Ask the AI tools directly. Write down the five to ten questions your customers ask. Ask each one in Perplexity, ChatGPT search and Copilot, and note every source they link. Perplexity lists its sources under each answer, which makes it the quickest to check.
- Check Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Search the same questions in Google. When an AI Overview appears, open its source links and note whether your page is one of them.
- Read the clicks in GA4. Landing pages in the "AI assistants" channel (set up below) are pages an AI cited and someone clicked.
- Read the fetches in your logs. Requests from ChatGPT-User or Perplexity-User show pages an AI fetched to answer a question, even when nobody clicked.
Keep a simple sheet with one row per check: date, question, AI tool, cited (yes or no), and the URL it cited. The same prompts show which competitor pages get cited instead of yours, which tells you what to improve. Answers change from run to run, so look at the trend over a few months, not a single check.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search Console
Google counts clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the Search Console Performance report, inside the Web search type. When AI Mode data was added in 2025, Search Engine Journal reported that there is no filter to separate it from normal results. Google's page on AI features and your website describes how these features use your pages.
What to do: watch impressions and clicks for the long, question-style queries in the Queries tab. AI Mode encourages longer questions, so growth there is a useful hint.
Copilot citations in Bing Webmaster Tools
In February 2026 Microsoft introduced AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools as a public preview. It shows how often your pages are cited as sources in Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing and some partner integrations, which pages are cited, and the "grounding queries" the AI used to find your content. It is one of the few places where an AI provider shows citations directly. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools to see it.
AI referrals in Google Analytics 4
When someone clicks a link in an AI answer, the visit usually arrives with the AI site as referrer. ChatGPT also adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to many of its links, as PPC Land reported in June 2025. To see these visits in one place:
- In GA4, go to Admin, then Data display, then Channel groups, and create a new channel group.
- Add a channel named "AI assistants" where Source matches the regex below.
- Move it above the Referral channel so these visits are not counted as ordinary referrals.
- Use the new channel group in the Traffic acquisition report and compare landing pages.
chatgpt\.com|openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com|claude\.ai
Visits that lose their referrer, for example from some apps, still show up as Direct, so treat the number as a minimum.
AI crawlers in your server logs
Your hosting logs show which AI crawlers fetch your pages, by user agent. OpenAI documents its crawlers: OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search and ChatGPT-User for fetches made because a user asked ChatGPT something. Perplexity documents PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User the same way. A rise in ChatGPT-User or Perplexity-User requests for a page means people are asking AI about that topic, even if few of them click.
If a crawler never appears, check that robots.txt or your CDN is not blocking it. Our guide to robots.txt for AI crawlers lists which bot does what, and why a website is not showing in ChatGPT covers the other common causes.
Which source shows what: a comparison
| Source | Shows | Misses |
|---|---|---|
| Search Console | Clicks and impressions from Google, AI features included | No AI-only filter, no other AI providers |
| Bing AI Performance | Citations in Copilot and Bing AI summaries, cited pages, grounding queries | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude |
| GA4 channel group | Visits from AI sites and what they do on your site | Answers that cite you without a click; visits with no referrer |
| Server logs | Which AI crawlers fetch which pages, and how often | Whether the page was then cited |
| Manual prompts | How AI answers your key questions today | Consistency: answers change from run to run |
A monthly AI visibility routine
- Export Bing AI Performance and note your most cited pages.
- Check the GA4 "AI assistants" channel for new landing pages.
- Look at Search Console for long question queries that grew.
- Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot your five most important questions and note which sources they cite.
- Run SEO AI Assistant on the pages that should be cited but are not, and fix what it flags.
Neither of our extensions tracks citations, and we don't claim to. SEO AI Assistant checks the things you control: whether AI search crawlers are allowed, whether your text is in the server HTML, and whether the page answers clearly. Pro's score trend chart shows how those scores change across audits. TrackLens adds an AEO/GEO signal score to every snapshot it saves, so if a redesign drops the author, dates or schema, you see it in the history.

Fix what stops AI search from citing you
SEO AI Assistant checks 10 AI search crawlers in your robots.txt, compares the server HTML with the rendered page, and runs 26 AEO and GEO checks from Chrome's side panel. It is free and needs no account.
AI traffic questions
How do I track traffic from ChatGPT in Google Analytics?
Create a custom channel group in GA4 with a channel whose source matches chatgpt.com and other AI domains, and place it above Referral. ChatGPT also adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to many links.
Can I see AI Overview clicks in Search Console?
They are included in the Performance report's Web totals, but there is no filter to show them on their own.
How do I find out AI citations for a website?
Check Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report for Copilot citations, then ask Perplexity, ChatGPT search, Copilot and Google your key questions and note which sources they link. GA4 referrals and ChatGPT-User or Perplexity-User requests in your logs show which pages AI tools use.
Which tool shows AI citations?
Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report, in public preview since February 2026, shows citations in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries. Other AI providers don't offer site owners a citation report.
What is ChatGPT-User in my server logs?
It is OpenAI's user agent for pages fetched because a ChatGPT user asked something that needed your page. OAI-SearchBot is the crawler for ChatGPT search.
Why is my AI referral traffic so low?
Many AI answers solve the question without a click, and some visits arrive without a referrer and are counted as Direct. Look at citations and crawler visits as well as clicks.
Does SEO AI Assistant track AI citations?
No. It checks whether AI search crawlers can reach and read a page and whether the page answers clearly. Use Bing Webmaster Tools, Search Console and GA4 to measure results.
